JASMINE's THOUGHTS on Supergirl Season 1 Episode 16 - "Falling"

About the Show
Supergirl is an action-adventure drama based on the DC Comics character Kara Zor-El, Superman's (Kal-El) cousin who, after 12 years of keeping her powers a secret on Earth, decides to finally embrace her superhuman abilities, and be the hero she was always meant to be.

Twelve-year-old Kara escaped the doomed planet Krypton with her parents' help at the same time as the infant Kal-El. Protected and raised on Earth by her foster family, the Danvers, Kara grew up in the shadow of her foster sister, Alex, and learned to conceal the phenomenal powers she shares with her famous cousin in order to keep her identity a secret.

Years later at 24, Kara lives in National City assisting media mogul and fierce taskmaster Cat Grant. She works alongside her friend and IT technician Winn Schott and famous photgrapher James Olsen, who Grant just hired away from the Daily Planet to serve as her new art director. However, Kara's days of keeping her talents a secret are over when Hank Henshaw, head of a super-secret ageny where her sister also works, enlists her to help them protect the citizens of National City from sinister threats. Though Kara will need to find a way to manage her newfound empowerment with her very human relationships, her heart soars as she takes to the skies as Supergirl to fight crime.

*My Thoughts*

Yes! Another element in the comic book series integrated into the show! This episode involves Red Kryptonite! Yes, we get a full view of what happens to Supergirl once she got exposed to Red Kryptonite. Just like Jeckyll and Hyde, the dark side of Kara comes to surface. Everything that she has worked hard for as Supergirl comes crumbling down with the danger she created.

Question is where did the Red Kryptonite come from!?! That question is answered when Maxwell Lord enters and admits that he created it! Oh wow! He even admits his mistake, and wants to help fix it.

However, Cat becomes that "protective mother" towards Supergirl, as she keeps from announcing to the city that Supergirl has gone bad...without all the facts. In the end, Cat comes to the realization that Supergirl is not the superhero that the people of National City loves and admires, so she does what she has to do to keep National city "safe," by warning everyone about her dangerous actions.

Well, this dark side of Supergirl has definitely ruined her Superhero image and has also destroyed/damaged lives. The effects that this dark Supergirl creates...fear and disappointment in the citizens of National Citizen and those she loves.

The heartwrenching part of it all is that there is some truth to what this dark side of Supergirl has done and said. We all have a dark side that we don't voice out and we keep in check. In Supergirl's position, she even has her abilities that enhances this dark side of herself.

Supergirl has been saving everyone, but who will save her now!?! When she is cured from the Red Kryptonite radiation, she comes out of that dark phase of herself and realizes what she has done...as if she was on the inside looking out...as if she was possessed. Kara/Supergirl has a lot to "fix"...with everyone...and that's not going to be easy. Again, Cat becomes that "protective mother"/mentor to Supergirl...and advises her on how to deal with what she did. Cat may be tough, but she does have a heart!

Melissa Benoist did an amazing job at portraying this darkside of Supergirl. Wow...she was absolutely convincing!

Until the next episode!

For now, here's a preview at Episode 17 - "Manhunter"
